Days 31 and 32, 1st and 2nd July, trip to Weymouth

Portland Bill taken as we sailed around in 27 knots of wind!

Dear Readers,

We had an exhilarating sail to Weymouth, yes we actually sailed. We had consistently strong winds, for once in the right direction, so we managed to sail most of the way. We had an average of 20 knots of winds all day, even up to 27 knots when we rounded Portland Bill.

We had a pod of dolphins that came to play around the boat twice during our trip across Lyme Bay, Josh reckoned there were up to 20 dolphins at one time. It was wonderful to see them jumping out of the water and swimming under the boat and coming up the other side. They swim so fast! There was a small dolphin there which we assumed was a baby dolphin, quite magical. We were so busy watching them we didn't get time to get any good photos.

We had got the tide timed perfectly so we wooshed around Portland Bill. avoiding the notorious Portland Race by sailing in close to shore, so got a good picture of the lighthouse despite the very rough and lumpy sea!

Once around the Bill the sea went calm within  the shelter of Weymouth Bay, so we sailed past Portland, which still has the remainder of a small naval base, and other leisure pursuits there now, such as a large marina and even a cruise ship moored in the shelter of the harbour.

The entrance to Portland Harbour which we passed on our way to Weymouth.

There is still a naval presence in Portland, which at one time was a large naval base.

So here we are in pretty Weymouth, moored by the Custom House Quay opposite the RNLI lifeboat and the Sailing Club.  We were tired when we got in after our 10 hour sail, especially as the auto helm hadn't been working and we had to helm it between us the whole trip. So I put a quiche in the oven and after eating this we went to bed! Our friends Barbara and Peter had come down to Weymouth to meet us and we arranged to meet them for coffee the next morning. Looking forward to catching up with friends tomorrow.
